Repair the rifle
- Find the Railway Maintenance Yard and get into the repair shed.
After finding the tracks again, head south through the railway tunnel. This will take players from Mystery Lake to Forlorn Muskeg. Continue to follow the tracks through another tunnel into Broken Railroad. Along the tracks is a derailed train. One of the cars has a burn barrel that can be used to make a fire, along with a few other items including a bedroll and a backpack. A section of it will be covered with a landslide and players will need to find a way around. Just before the blocked section is a path that goes downhill to a frozen lake with a waterfall on one end. Once across the lake look for another path going up that leads to a tree laying down between two large rock formations. Cross the tree and keep going forward. This will put the player back at the tracks on the other side of the landslide.
Another derailed train is on the track but is not explorable. Beyond that is a pickup truck. From here, players will need to head north from the track to locate the shop. Further down the tracks is another derailed train and a pickup. The pickup contains the Charcoal Note. This note will put the location of another stash on the map near the marsh.
Following the power lines from the track, players will come into the Maintenance Yard. There are several vehicles to look through. Inside the building is a room with a bed. The restricted area door leads to several more rooms . One room will have a corpse on the ground. Walking over it starts a cutscene. Mackenzie trips over the corpse, then finds a note on the floor that refers to "Forest Talkers". The note mentions a Lodge. Also in the same room on a counter is a pair of Bolt Cutters (these will be needed later), and the milling machine needed to fix the rifle. Clicking on it to update the mission. Mackenzie is still unable to use the rifle himself but will carry Jeremiah's Repaired Rifle as part of the mission.
Search the Hunting Lodge
- Look for more info about the Forest Talkers at the old hunting lodge.
- Search the Lodge for supplies. Something here could save your life.
The Hunting Lodge is now available on the map and is up north from the Machine Shop. After leaving the shed, Mackenzie will complain about a headache (possibly from when he hit his head on the table after tripping over the corpse) and pass out. He wakes up some time later and looks outside. Lights and a nearby computer are flickering with power as the Aurora makes it's presence. The local wolves appear wary of the lights and avoid them ("They hate the light").
Head for the Lodge, following the path across the bridge. Players will need the Bolt Cutters found at the Machine Shop to get through the gate.
Inside the Lodge is a Hunting Lodge Rifle (above the fireplace) and some Rifle Ammunition and a rifle cleaning kit on a bench across from the fireplace. as well as the expected food and supply items. A bed is upstairs. Walking into the basement you will find a Flashlight which will play a cutscene, and you can use it if the Aurora is still out. A nearby table has a note on it Forest Talker Map Note.
Return to Jeremiah with the Repaired Rifle
- Get back to Jeremiah.
Outside the Lodge is a rock wall with a rope attachment point. Use the climbing rope to get down. This area includes the Hunter's Blind and a frozen pond (watch for the bear). Go around the pond and continue on to the Maintenance Yard, then follow the power lines up the hill back to the railroad tracks. Go left at the tracks and follow them. Players will need to go around the landslide again (left from the tracks and back across the tree bridge). Continue down the tracks and through the tunnel into Forlorn Muskeg. The Old Bear has finally found you near the derailed logging cars, and as per Jeremiah's warning, it cannot be killed. Attempting to fight it will result in a Struggle, so do not shoot it and instead walk elsewhere into the marsh.
Continue to follow the tracks through the next tunnel into Mystery Lake, then on to the trapper's house. A cutscene will begin after entering the house. The trapper is better and appreciates his rifle getting fixed, with Mackenzie remarking that he found his own too. Mackenzie wants to leave but Jeremiah won't let him leave without teaching him survival skills. Mackenzie objects but Jeremiah isn't backing down and still wants something in return. The player will need to learn skills and have the choices of Fishing. Clothing, and Hunting. The player will need to complete the tasks and supply items to earn Jeremiah's trust.
If asked about the lights in the sky, the trapper will admit they seem different than the usual aurora borealis. Mackenzie mentions how the lights seem to temporarily 'power things up' but the trapper hasn't seen anything like that. He doesn't have any electricity going to his cabin but won't tell Mackenzie why. After each survival skill, players will need to talk to Jeremiah about 'Survival Skills' again.

Differences from Redux Episode 2
Several plot points and locations have been replaced/altered since the Redux re-release of Episode 2:
Plot Points and Gameplay Changes
- All 3rd person cutscenes have been removed.
- The Trust system has been entirely removed since Redux
- Certain items, furniture, and containers inside Jeremiah's home have dark red text, signifying that they are owned by him. Taking, searching, or Harvesting any of these items will produce a small message that the player has lost Trust with Jeremiah. This is also true in the previous mission Risk of Infection, despite Jeremiah not being conscious if you steal from him.
- The knowledge unlocks involving Mystery Lake, Carter Dam, and Aurora Observations was replaced by Mystery Lake & Area, Carter Hydro Dam (Collectible), and Aurora Observations.
- The Cache location Jeremiah gives full of Flares near the transition cave to Mountain Town was cut entirely and replaced with another Cache.
- The side mission Forge Blueprints (mission) was cut from the game, and the Improvised Knife and Improvised Hatchet blueprints are available from the start of Episode 2. Hunting Knives and Hatchets are also far more plentiful throughout Episode 1 and 2 in the Redux, with Hunting Knives being entirely absent in both Predux Episodes (until acquiring Jeremiah's Knife).
- The Deerskin Pants and Deerskin Boots blueprints are now unlocked after completing the "Learn to hunt and kill a deer" task in the side mission Survival School.
- The Snow Shelter mechanic is available from the start of Episode 2.
- The side mission Jeremiah's Hideout was replaced with the Aurora Hatch side mission
- The Shortwave Tower West and the Shortwave Tower East did not exist in this build, and were added to Forlorn Muskeg as part of the mission Signal to Noise.
- The Locomotive Engine derailment is much further up the tracks and away from the crossroads to the Maintenance Yard, which was changed to feature a crashed portion for Mackenzie to walk into to show another cutscene involving the Old Bear in Redux.
- As a result, the Aurora and Methuselah do not appear while near the Locomotive.
- Mackenzie fixes Jeremiah's Broken Rifle with a Hand Powered Milling Machine, which was cut in the Redux. (Though the Milling Machine would return in the Errant Pilgrim AKA Bleak Inlet update)
- A pair of Bolt Cutters is found near the Hand Powered Milling Machine used to cut the gate leading to the Hunting Lodge, which were also cut from Episode 2, but would return in Episode 3: Crossroads Elegy.
- A 3rd person cutscene plays of Mackenzie tripping over the Corpse of a Forest Talker and hitting his head on a table, then later fixing Jeremiah's Broken Rifle with the Hand Powered Milling Machine. After walking outside, another 3rd person cutscene would play with Mackenzie passing out from hitting his head and then waking up in the middle of the night to see the Aurora has returned to the sky. This was changed in Redux to Mackenzie just getting knocked out after the encounter with the Old Bear near the Locomotive Engine, then waking up to the Aurora.
- The Hunting Lodge Rifle is found above the Fireplace inside the Hunting Lodge and also plays a 3rd person cutscene. This was changed to the Broken Bear Spear in Redux.
- A 3rd person cutscene plays when finding the Flashlight downstairs, which was also cut.
- The ringing Phone Box in the Lodge is placed next to the front entrance and it stops ringing once approached. It is placed near the back entrance and can be opened (and then stops ringing) in the Redux version.
- The Old Bear appears after finding the Hunting Lodge Rifle and Fixing Jeremiah's rifle in Forlorn Muskeg near the tracks past the timber cars derailment. He is unkillable and will attack the player if they do not heeding Jeremiah's warning to run and hide from it. This is changed in Redux, with the Old Bear appearing near the Radio Towers and having to be driven away with the Bear Spear.
- The Old Bear also appears in the mountains near the transition to Mystery Lake like in Redux, after Mackenzie repairs the Bear Spear.
