A Warm Cave is a common type of outdoor cave that has no transition screen but provides a Warmth bonus. Such caves are found in every region except Coastal Highway, Keeper's Pass North, and Keeper's Pass South.
Cave (Transition Zone) are not considered Warm Caves, as these are indoor spaces. Certain Bear Caves (such as the ones in Coastal Highway ) do not have interiors, and also do not count.
Overview[]
Warm Caves are divided into two layers, a cold front area and warm back area.
Front Sheltered Zone[]
The front of the cave simply has the same air temperature as outside the cave, however it is completely sheltered from the wind regardless of wind direction, and a Magnifying Lens can be used within it.
Back Warm Zone[]
The back of the cave is warmer like indoor spaces, but the back of the cave does not have a fixed temperature. Instead there is a warmth bonus which is generally sufficient to allow sleeping without a fire, at least if the player has sufficiently warm clothing and Bedroll.
- The player walks slower as they transition to the back of the cave, and immediately receives a Warmth bonus.
- It is possible to cure hides, guts, and saplings in the back of such caves.
- Does not progress Cabin Fever.
- A Campfire may be lit on the floor, in the front or back of the cave.
- A Magnifying Lens may not be used, although it is possible to light a fire within the back zone while standing in the front zone.
- The light level for the purpose of performing tasks is the same as outside (Mending and Repairing is not possible during a Blizzard/Heavy Fog Weather at night).
Special "Warm Caves"[]
There are also a few exterior buildings that give a warmth bonus despite not having a transition to an indoor space:
- The outdoor room with the bed at the Maintenance Yard
- Break room at Last Resort Cannery
- Room outside the Workshop
- Stone Church
The following areas behave like Warm Caves, though these indoor areas progress Cabin Fever.
