The Grey Mother is the third mission of Episode 1 of Wintermute. In this mission, Mackenzie meets Grey Mother and performs various tasks for her in order to coax information about Astrid's whereabouts out of the old women, while also learning more about the Town of Milton.
Objectives
- Find supplies to help keep Grey Mother alive.
- Check the gas station for more supplies.
- Stock Grey Mother's fridge with food (8000 Calories).
- Fill Grey Mother's firewood bin outside (12 days worth).
- Grey Mother thinks something happened at the tunnel leading out from Milton. Investigate.
- Search the tunnel leading out of Milton.
- Examine the bus.
- Return to Grey Mother.
- Something precious was stolen from Grey Mother. Find it, and return it to her.
- Search the Milton Farmhouse for a safety deposit key.
- Retrieve the contents of the safety deposit box from the bank.
- Return to Grey Mother.

Upon entering the house, a cutscene will begin in which the Grey Mother character is introduced. The player can obtain additional background information about the town and its history by selecting topics to ask the Grey Mother about. At the completion of talking to Grey Mother, the player will have three tasks to complete—filling Grey Mother's firewood bin, stocking her fridge with food, and investigating the Orca Gas Station. Scavenge the town of Milton to find the required items. The hatchet in the shed behind Milton House is useful for breaking down furniture to obtain reclaimed wood. 8000 calories of food must be put into the fridge in the kitchen, and 12 days worth of wood fuel must be put into the firewood bin directly beside the door on the porch. Each hour of burn time is counted as 1.1 days worth of firewood.
The Orca Gas Station will be marked on the player's map. Inside the gas station, Mackenzie meets Methuselah.
After returning to Grey Mother, she will give the player a new quest to investigate the tunnel collapse. There is an option to investigate the Crashed Prison Transport Bus by looking at the rear door.
When the player returns to Grey mother again, she will ask Mackenzie to look at the Paradise Meadows Farm for a safe deposit key. In the fireplace will be some soup that Grey Mother has prepared.
When the player enters the farmhouse, Hobbs is sitting on the bench. The player will have to decide whether to save Hobbs by pulling out the knife, or to push it in and kill him. The decision will not have an effect on the gameplay, but will change later dialogues with Methuselah. Beside Hobbs on the bench is a box with the key to Grey Mother's safe deposit box. A prybar lies on the floor.
The player must then go to the Milton Credit Union and open the safety deposit box. In order to open the vault, the player will need the vault code. First, go to the manager's office in the Credit union and open the middle drawer of the desk. Inside is a key which will open the Bank Manager's House. The drawer of the nightstand in the bedroom of the Manager's House will contain a note with the vault code. Return to the Credit Union and open the vault using the code from the note. The note can be viewed by bringing up the journal. Open box #15 and take Grey Mother's Safety Deposit Box. Return to Grey Mother. This will unlock the One Last Thing side mission, and will also immediately begin the next main mission, Paradise Lost.
