Wintermute-Exclusive content.
This content only appears in Wintermute.
Sharp piece of scrap metal that broke off your plane. Makes a good improvised knife.
In-game description

Scrap Metal Shard is Tool exclusive to Wintermute.

Overview[]

The Scrap Metal Shard is identical in functionality to a Hunting Knife, but weighs less (0.30kg vs 0.50kg of a knife). It can be used as a self-defense tool, harvesting animal carcasses, Cloth from curtains/pillows, tinder from cardboard, breaking ice for Ice Fishing, and crafting at a Work Bench.

Location[]

It is obtained automatically in Episode 1: Do Not Go Gentle, pulled straight out of Will Mackenzie's hand and placed into his inventory during the mission The Crash. The Shard does not appear if the player starts Episode 2 out of order.

If the Scrap Metal Shard is kept in the player's inventory, it may be taken into Episode 2: Luminance Fugue. It is ultimately lost after starting Episode 4: Fury, Then Silence (likely tossed with the rest of Mackenzie's gear by Mathis).

Repair[]

Scrap Metal Shard can be repaired with a Whetstone and the Sharpening skill, restoring 3% condition to the Shard.

Harvesting[]

The Scrap Metal Shard cannot be harvested.

Combat[]

Scrap Metal Shard can be used in a Struggle, causing a Wolf some condition damage.

Trivia[]

  • The Scrap Metal Shard is a fragment of Will Mackenzie's aircraft, with a bloody cloth as a handle. It is impaled straight through Mackenzie's left hand after the plane crash, where he pulls it straight out of his hand upon noticing it. This is considered to be a very unwise first aid practice, as the shard is most likely stopping the majority of the bleeding.
    • Afterwards, Mackenzie is required to bandage his hand and a cloth bandage is shown on his hand until the beginning of The Grey Mother, where it disappears along with any sign of the wound on Mackenzie's hand.
  • The Scrap Metal Shard originally could not be repaired with Whetstones in the Predux Wintermute. This was changed in the Redux Episode 1 redesign.
