Noisemakers, otherwise known as Pipebombs, are a tool in The Long Dark. They are primarily used for frightening wildlife.

Overview[]

Noisemakers are handheld improvised explosive devices composed of sealed tin cans packed with gunpowder, and are effective at frightening wildlife, especially wolves and timberwolves. It is actually capable of even killing injured Bears and Moose.

They can be crafted during Episode 4 of Wintermute at a workbench and are used as a defense tool to frighten Timberwolves away.

In Survival Mode, they can be crafted after picking up at least one Noisemaker (located in the mine near the top of the Blackrock region, uncommonly at the hangar in Forsaken Airfield or even in two specific Memento Caches), after which the blueprint will be permanently unlocked for your survivor and can be crafted at any ammunition workbench.

Usage[]

Wolves will flee from the sound of an exploding Noisemaker, similar to the report of gunshots. Timberwolves' morale will decrease significantly when a noisemaker is thrown near them. Bear and moose will also run from an exploding noisemaker.

During the Aurora, Noisemakers will still scare off wolves, but not bears.

  • Noisemakers may be selected from the Radial Menu, the Weapons hotkey, or directly from the inventory.
  • Ignite the Noisemaker while holding it. (This does not require a firestarter (e.g. consuming matches) unlike torches).
  • Throw and the Noisemaker will explode on impact, or after 3 seconds once lit.
  • If a Struggle ensues between the player character and an animal, and the player character has a lit Noisemaker in hand, the explosive will fall at their feet and injure both them and the attacking animal. This can end the struggle (if it's against a Wolf or Timberwolf) or even kill the attacker (very rarely, but more likely if it has been injured beforehand).
  • If an ignited Noisemaker is not thrown within 3 seconds, it will explode in the survivor's hand, causing Condition damage and Burns.

Creation[]

In Survival Mode the recipe to craft Noisemakers is unavailable until one has first been looted; the most reliable way to find a Noisemaker and obtain the blueprint is to loot the four that spawn in the Blackrock region, specifically in Last Prospect. However, if the player owns the Tales From the Far Territory DLC, they can find their first Noisemaker in three other ways (see Survival Mode section). Once the recipe has been learned, they may be crafted at an Ammunition Work Bench.

Story mode[]

In Wintermute, Episode 4: Fury, Then Silence, a Noisemaker may be obtained inside the guardhouse just before leaving Blackrock Penitentiary.

Survival Mode[]

In Survival Mode, Noisemakers are only found in the mine at Last Prospect in the northernmost area of Blackrock. The mine is at the top of two rope climbs from the bottom of the Fool's Corner ravine. The ropes can be reached by from two directions:

  • traveling to the northern-most part of the map and turning left right before Mule Bridge, reaching a rope at Fool's Corner and going down to the ravine, at which point the player can climb back on the other side and reach Last Prospect,
  • or going down to the ravine via Cliff Cave or Cook's Farm and traveling up the river until the northern end of the ravine and the ropes can be accessed. Once the Noisemakers have been picked up, the player can craft them at either Ammunition Workbench.

With the Tales From The Far Territory update, Noisemakers can rarely spawn in the Main Hangar in the Forsaken Airfield region or inside two specific Memento Caches (one in Blackrock, on the exterior of the Prison wall and another in Bleak Inlet near the Coastal Highway Terminus Hunter's Blind) giving the player three other potential ways to get the blueprint without having to climb the longest rope in the game to reach Last Prospect or having to travel to Blackrock entirely in the case of the Forsaken Airfield hangar or the Bleak Inlet Memento Cache.
