Night Walker is an achievement in The Long Dark.
Guide[]
This achievement is obtained after surviving for an entire night outside in a single Survival Mode game. It is most easily done on Pilgrim, although it will often be obtained eventually through normal gameplay on harder difficulties as well, especially once players start venturing into regions with little man-made shelter. These include Ash Canyon, Forlorn Muskeg, Forsaken Airfield, Hushed River Valley, Sundered Pass, and Timberwolf Mountain (among others), where finding an indoor location to spend the night may not be an option.
Suitable locations[]
Outside refers to being anywhere but inside a building or other structure that contributes to Cabin Fever. Therefore this achievement is obtainable whilst being inside of a train carriage (such as at the Poacher's Camp), a Vehicle, a shallow cave, or an Ice Fishing Hut.
Preparation[]
It is highly recommended to pack sufficient warm clothing and materials for starting a fire. Some type of Bedroll is recommended, but not essential.
Obtaining[]
Although it is possible to obtain this achievement inadvertently by getting stuck outside after dark in bad weather, this method can be dangerous. A much safer way is to use a Fishing Hut, as these provide protection from the wind, and have a pot belly stove. Taking enough firewood to keep the stove burning all night will maintain the temperature above freezing. The fire can also be used to boil water if supplies run low. Bringing Fishing Tackle is useful as well as, if necessary, the player can easily get more food by fishing and be able to cook it instantly on the fire. In addition, using a fishing hut with a door means no animals will come inside, while still remaining technically outside.
Another option is to spend the night inside a warm cave, as this will provide a 10oC warmth bonus, while counting as an outdoor location. The Survivor will start walking noticeably slower when entering the warm section of the cave compared to being outside; this can be used as a guide to knowing where the warm zone starts. Another option is to drop a Green Birch or Maple sapling; if it starts curing, the survivor is in the warm zone. If the cave is still too cold, lighting a campfire will provide sufficient warmth, as the wind won't blow it out.
A final option is to use a Vehicle, as these are sheltered from the wind and provide a warmth bonus. It is possible to warm up the inside of the vehicle by lighting a fire outside, but there is a risk of the fire getting blown out if the wind shifts overnight.
