Donner is the fifth and final mission in Episode 4 of the story. In this mission, Mackenzie fetches the hardcase from the warden's office and escapes Blackrock with Jace after Mathis' attempts to free his son Donner with dynamite fails.

The mission starts with a cutscene where Will, tied to a chair, sees the deceased Franklin being wheeled out of the prison on a gurney. Mathis then enters his cell, and after revealing that Franklin told him about Will's communication with Jace and their efforts to obstruct Donner's release, decides to execute Will. Just before the killing blow, however, an explosion rocks the prison. Will's chair is broken, and Mathis runs to solitary to find the source of the explosion. Follow Mathis towards solitary to start another cutscene, where Mathis once again threatens to execute Will. However, shortly before Mathis grabs him, a door will slam shut between the two, and Jace will talk over the loudspeaker, informing the convicts that she, not Franklin or Will, was obstructing Mathis' plans all along.
To get out of the prison, head down the hallway, turn right, go through a door on the left, duck under a filing cabinet, and go through two more sets of doors. This will lead to an air duct, which can be travelled through. From there, run up the stairs, duck under another filing cabinet, and enter an office to the right. Use a ramp to climb onto a desk and through a broken window, then run upstairs to the Warden's office. This must all be done quickly to avoid suffocation.
Once in the warden's office, get the hardcase, then talk to Jace. Jace reveals she's at the power plant, and urges Will to run, as she doesn't know how long the lockdown will last. Immediately after the conversation, the convicts can be heard beating on doors trying to get to Will. Head down the hallway and for the exit. From there, go down the fire exit and head to the right, then go through a board to get down into the yard.
Once in the yard, care must be taken to avoid the spotlights. Observe each light for a few moments to see its pattern, then sprint around it. If caught in a spotlight, Will will be shot at, causing significant condition loss and bleeding. Note that the convicts aren't 100% accurate, so it is sometimes possible to sprint through a light and take no damage.
Head for the entrance to the steam tunnels. From there, follow the same route as in Episode 2, but speed is needed on part of this run to avoid suffocation. Again, avoid live wires, fires, and steam leaks. Light from a storm lantern can prove helpful here, but is not necessary. From there, head to the Power Plant, entering via the two main doors.
Once in the Power Plant, a cutscene will play where the player finally meets Jace, and the two will chat for a bit... until they realize that Mathis and his gang have followed them through the steam tunnels to the power plant! As Mathis begins to taunt the two, Heller will interrupt Mathis to tell him that Donner is in bad shape. Mathis then attempts to kill Will, and the two struggle until Will manages to stun Mathis long enough to grab Jace and jump into the river below. Another cutscene follows, where Will and a half-frozen Jace reach the shore, and Will offers to light a fire to warm the two of them up once more.
The final scene of the episode shows Astrid reaching Perseverance Mills by canoe, where two unknown survivors note that she is alive, and mention she's not an escapé from a quarantine. Jane Yang then appears to attend to her, and realizes that she doesn't have the hardcase. This inadvertently reveals that the case contains a cure for the disease afflicting the inhabitants of the town.
Trivia
- Given that Jace called all phones in the region via the party line whenever she spoke to Will, it's likely that Mathis was listening in to Mackenzie's last conversation with Jace from the phone in the warden's office.
- You can stash items in the lockers in the steam tunnels and you can retrieve them when escaping however even if you have a firearm such as the revolver with you, you can't use it to fight Mathis.
Bugs
- If you load the auto save at the beginning of the chapter it will put you into the cutscene of being tied to a chair. However once the cutscene ends Mathis will not appear at the end of the hall and the interaction with him will not happen. This will allow you to walk to the end of the hall there's nothing down there however walking into certain areas such as the hole in the wall will cause the walls to disappear. The only way to fix this is to load a save before you return to the prison.
