The Long Dark Wiki

Daisy Chaining is a fan made gameplay term (similar to Mountain Goating, and Hibernation) that refers to the practice of using Torches to move a fire from one location to another, and to keep warm along the way, whilst using the least Fire Starting resources as possible. This practice helps conserve Wood Matches, Cardboard Matches, and Firestrikers that may already be in short supply, deters wolves from attacking you, as well as to preserve resources for late game runs.

Practicality[]

Daisy Chaining is primarily more useful on higher difficulties Survival Mode games (Interloper, As the Dead Sleep) in order to keep a starting player with low Warmth Clothing from freezing, as they move from location to location in order to scavenge materials to improve their odds of survival. Lower difficulty options tend to be more forgiving in terms of starting clothing, available clothing and resources, and overall lower Needs restrictions, and is thus less useful of a gameplay tactic.

Even on easier gameplay settings, Daisy Chaining is a useful gameplay strategy for late game Fire Starting resource preservation.

Chaining the Flame[]

Daisy Chaining begins when a player creates a fire in a Campfire or other Firebox. By adding more fuel, the player can pull multiple Torches out and store them for later use. Once a player has enough Torches, the last lit Torch that is pulled out is then used as a source of light and heat to keep a player warm in their travels (albeit temporarily if they have low Warmth Clothing).

As the player travels throughout the game world, great care must be kept to keep the lit Torch from being blown out by strong winds, or being extinguished by waterfalls. Players should also avoid hostile Wildlife in their travels, as this could extinguish the Torch early. It is also recommended to collect Fuel in order to create a new fire for later use.

When the overall Condition of the Torch begins to reach its end point, the player then tosses the lit Torch onto the ground and then procures another Torch from their inventory. Then, by walking up to and interacting with the dying Torch, the player can pass the fire of their dying Torch to the newer, higher condition one present in their hand.

This practice of chaining fires can continue until the player runs out of spare Torches to pass on the flame, or finds a suitable location to warm up. It is then advised to create a Fire with the currently lit Torch with any spare Fuel found along the way, to either create more Torches or to make use of the dying flame in order to cook Food/Drinks or boil Water.

The chain will end at some point, either by the player's hands or by the environment, but can be started again once enough Fuel is present to procure more Torches, but the player must use another match to start a new chain.
