Cleaning or Firearm Cleaning is a secondary Survival Skill that is used to repair Hunting Rifles and Revolvers. Higher levels in the cleaning skill reduce the amount of time required to clean and increase the amount of condition restored to a firearm by cleaning.
Overview
Cleaning involves using the Firearm Cleaning Kit to keep a firearm in optimal condition.
The Cleaning skill is only visible when maintaining a hunting rifle or revolver and is not an official survival skill in the player's journal. Players start with 30 skill points, and gain 1 additional skill point each time a gun is cleaned.
How to clean firearms
Players can clean their firearms with an aptly named firearm cleaning kit any time of day; light is not required.
To clean a weapon, players have to select the "Clean" menu option while viewing the gun to repair in the inventory menu. The amount time perform one cleaning and the amount of condition restored to the weapon by each cleaning is listed on the right-hand side of the screen.
Currently, players will always have a 100% chance of success while cleaning and cannot fail. Activating the start button on the bottom right will launch an attempt.
Cleaning a firearm consumes 5% condition from the firearm cleaning kit and restores some condition to the weapon based on the player's skill level. Each rifle cleaning kit can be used up to 20 times for repairing a firearm.
Equipment
Players need a Firearm Cleaning Kit before they can start cleaning rifles and revolvers. Cleaning kits can be found while scavenging in containers and buildings that are likely to contain tools or guns (e.g., Signal Hill). Cleaning Kits are always found in 100% condition.
Available firearms
The player is able to clean the following firearms to improve their condition:
| Image | Name |
|---|---|
| Barb's Rifle | |
| Bunker Rifle | |
| Curator's Rifle | |
| Vaughn's Rifle | |
| Hunting Lodge Rifle | |
| Forester's Revolver | |
| Hunter's Revolver | |
| Warden's Revolver |
The player is not currently able to clean the Distress Pistol to improve its condition.
Skill levels
Players can increase their cleaning skill by cleaning a hunting rifle or revolver.
There is currently no Research Book that allow players to increase their firearm cleaning skill.
The cleaning skill does not unlock any perks, but gives a gradual reduction to the amount of time required to clean, and additionally gives a gradual increase to the amount of condition restored to a firearm by cleaning. Key milestones (based on the amount of skill points) are listed in the table below.
