Buried Echoes is the second Tale released for the Tales from the Far Territory addon in Survival Mode. As of V 2.27, Buried Echoes can be started on a new playthrough out of order as soon as the Handheld Shortwave Radio is acquired, as long as Signal Void has been completed on another playthrough and its associated Badge is acquired. The Transmitter in Forsaken Airfield will need to be repaired before this Tale can be started if played out of order.

Preface

Continuing the events of the last Tale, the survivor decides to follow clues left behind by the Security Chief's Logs to investigate the mystery of Rüdiger's experiments. The Logs mentions a machine in the heart of a nearby mining complex, so begin heading to the Zone of Contamination while carrying the Handheld Shortwave Radio. Since the repaired Transmitter in Forsaken Airfield broadcasts its radio coverage into the Zone, there is no need to search for another Transmitter or parts to fix one while you are there.

Entering the Zone of Contamination will begin Buried Echoes.

Search for signs of life

Entering the Zone will prompt you with an objective to find any sign of life in the region. A signal can be located near the Boss's Settlement when the Handheld Radio becomes active, at the corner of a ruined cabin. Uncovering it produces a lockbox containing some simple supplies and a A Page From A Journal written on 18-June-91. The Author of said note writes of the strange events surrounding the region: toxic chemicals, sick wolves, and inaccessible areas in the mine, as well as a Helicopter that crashed in the mountains near the water pumps.

Head to the Old Corral near Unquenched Extraction. When the Handheld Radio is powered, head east into the hills to find the crashed helicopter to uncover a lockbox buried under the tail section. Claim the Foreman's Key inside and the Security Chief's Log 31 that was also uncovered in the nearby snow.

Search the Mine

After grabbing both items, head to the Headframe Building to open a locked door in order to obtain Foreman's Site Report Day 45 and some Bolt Cutters.

Return to the surface and head to the Concentrator. From here, head to the top floor and walk outside across the trestle to open the mine door in the mountains. The door is locked, prompting a message to explore the rest of the mine for a means to open it. Before exploring the mines, head to the 7th floor of the Concentrator and locate a Respirator in the offices, as you will need it to safely explore the mines. Afterwards, head all the way back to the Headframe Building and go all the way down to the bottom of the Langston Mine.

Heading below to the lowest level of the elevator shaft and entering the door will put you in a room either a building to the right that can be unlocked with the Foreman's key for Foreman's Site Report Day 64. Collect it and head left from the mineshaft elevator door and continue onwards until you find a large airshaft cavern with a catwalk going around it. A nearby locked gate can be opened with the Bolt Cutters and a Corpse can be looted for the Mine Gate Key.

Search the Mountain Mine for any signs of Rüdiger

Head back up to the mountain mine entrance and unlock the gate. Security Chief's Log 32 can be found in the gated area to the right upon entering. Head down the minecart railroad until you find a Supply Bin with Foreman's Site Report Day 38 on it. Continue down even further until you find a room with a several crates and yet another Security Chief's Log 33. Head down the tunnel made of concrete to find the machine that was built inside the mine, and approach the console. The player will pass out from touching it and will reawaken to find that an Aurora/Glimmer Fog event has activated the machine. After this, head into the nearby control room to find My Testament, Security Chief's Log (illegible), Foreman's Site Report Day (illegible), and The Security Chief's Remains.

A Faded Photograph is added to the player's inventory when picking up the Security Chief's final log, read it and you will be instructed to lay her remains to rest at the Enduring Waterfall. Before leaving, be sure to pick up the ultimate prize of this Tale, the Foreman's Tool Belt, if you haven't already. Returning to the previous room with the minecarts and walking down the tunnel filled with water will lead the player to open another locked door to the Level 1 section of the mine, and a nearby shoe conveyor can be taken to the Conveyor Room. Travel to Enduring Waterfall to the south west of the map and lay the Chief to rest by placing her remains in the open snow close to the fallen tree bridge, thus ending the Tale.

The Tales from the Far Territory is to be concluded in the third and final Tale Last Horizon...
