Projectile component of Rifle or Revolver Ammunition. Can be Crafted from Scrap Lead.
In-game description

Bullets are a crafting item in The Long Dark.

Overview[]

Bullets are a material for crafting ammunition at the Ammunition Workbench in Bleak Inlet and Blackrock. Six bullets are produced from one Scrap Lead at the Ammunition Forge (found with the Ammunition Workbench), which must be lit and with 1 hour or more fuel inside of it. Scrap Lead is obtained by harvesting a Car Battery (found beneath the hood of some cars and trucks) with a Hacksaw; one Car Battery will always yield six Scrap Lead; each piece of Scrap Lead may be crafted into six Bullets, so one Car Battery always allows the crafting of 36 Bullets.

Each bullet can be crafted into one Revolver Ammunition or Rifle Ammunition.

Bullets may also be acquired by harvesting Revolver or Hunting Rifle Ammunition (with higher chance of receiving them, at higher Gunsmithing skill).

Tips[]

  • Crafting Bullets requires a lot of fuel and time: 1 hour per Scrap Lead (6 Bullets) produced.
  • Car Batteries may be found by lifting the hoods of cars and trucks.
  • Not all vehicles have batteries, only ~50% will have one.
  • Car Batteries weigh 15kg, but can be harvested with a Hacksaw into 6 pieces of Scrap Lead weighting just 1.5kg.
  • A convenient and safe way harvest Car Batteries is inside their vehicle.
  • Car Batteries and Scrap Lead are useless on Interloper difficulty because firearms never spawn, as well as Wintermute Episodes because there is no access to an Ammunition Work Bench.
  • Car Batteries are finite and non-renewable.
  • It is advised to craft a lot of bullets first if your gunsmithing skill is low, since crafting them also give experience points, so wasting ingredients can be avoided.

Trivia[]

  • The Errant Pilgrim update introduced Gunsmithing.
  • Despite bullets for the Revolver and Hunting Rifle Ammunition being of different lengths, the Bullet object model used for both ammo types is the same size. Rifle rounds typically have longer bullet lengths than pistol rounds, but using a Bullet for hunting rifle ammunition does not affect its lethality. Evidence that different bullets existed can be seen in cut icons found in the game files.
