Stance of Mod's informations in TLD wikia
It's that time where I've to talk about my stance in regards to Mod's information in TLD wikia.
For years, I forbade promoting unofficial mods in the wikia for obvious reasons; they are not supported by Hinterland and are unofficial. However, I decided to alter the stance slightly; mods approved by myself can have their own page in this wikia with a strong disclaimer that the content is from a mod rather than HL's official update.
As it stands right now, only modded regions information will be permitted to be posted in this wikia. This may expand in the future.
Region Spotlight: Episode 1 - Desolation Point
Hello folks,
Several years ago, I used to do a Region Spotlight on the Lord of the Rings Minecraft Mod wiki every now and then. I thought that it might be fun to do a few Region Spotlights on this wiki, so, here we go: I'm doing my first Region Spotlight on: Desolation Point.
- 1 Where is it?
- 2 what do I like about this region?
- 3 Any advice for Survivors?
- 4 Where should I live?
Desolation Point is the easternmost region in The Long Dark. Getting there is not difficult, though it is a good several hours' walk (in-game) from Coastal Highway. Most of the trip involves following the road eastwards, though one part requires travelling through an abandoned mine, which can be tricky without a light source.
The short answer: living by the sea. I live about 50m…
Where's the Travois most useful?
For people who are pack rats, the Travois can be extremely useful, as it massively increases how much can be hauled. However, the Travois has a few limitations, namely that it can't be used on steep slopes or in tight places. It also must be folded when players want to climb up a rope. This begs the question: in which regions is the Travois most useful? Let's take a look.
To enable a quick overview, I have created three categories of Travois usefulness:
- High: the Travois has multiple uses in this region, and its use has few limitations
- Average: the Travois is useful, but its use has some limitations in this region
- Limited: while there are cases where the Travois could be useful, it won't be most of the time
- 1 Ash Canyon: Limited
- 2 Blackrock: Avera…
What were the regions of Great Bear before The Collapse?
Hello everyone,
Today, The Long Dark features a wide variety of regions, and each of them has a different theme. This got me wondering: what was life like in each of the regions of Great Bear prior to the collapse? What were the people doing there? I have got a few theories, so let's get started.
- 1 Ash Canyon
- 2 Blackrock
- 3 Bleak Inlet
- 4 Broken Railroad
- 5 Coastal Highway
- 6 Desolation Point
- 7 Forlorn Muskeg
- 8 Forsaken Airfield
- 9 Hushed River Valley
- 10 Mountain Town
- 11 Mystery Lake
- 12 Pleasant Valley
- 13 Timberwolf Mountain
- 14 Transfer Pass
- 15 Zone of Contamination
This one's a bit of an oddball for me. The region clearly has a history in gold mining, given the gold mine and the abandoned mine at the Homesteader's Respite, however, there isn't really any way in or out of the…
What region should you live in?
Updated December 26, 2022 with Forsaken Airfield and Transfer Pass
There is a lot of speculation on the wiki, as well as on the Hinterland Forums, in regards to which region is the best to live in. For those of you who still haven't chosen a favourite region, I will go through all the major regions in the game, along with the three outdoor transition zones, and, for each region, I will give you five reasons why you might want to live there, along with five reasons why you might not want to live there. I will not, however, tell you which region is the best; that's up to you to decide.
- 1 Ash Canyon
- 1.1 Advantages
- 1.2 Disadvantages
- 2 Bleak Inlet
- 2.1 Advantages
- 2.2 Disadvantages
- 3 Broken Railroad
- 3.1 Advantages
- 3.2 Disadvantages
- 4 Coastal Highway
- 4.1 Advantages
- 4.2 Disad…
Things not to do
Many forum threads on the Hinterland Forums, along with pages on this wiki, will tell you what to do if you want to survive on Great Bear Island. This blog post takes a sort of different approach; instead of listing the best practices for surviving in the game, I'll look at some common mistakes players make and how to avoid them.
Many of these tips came from the community on the Hinterland Forums, in this thread. Remember -- just because you've done something (or several things) on this list doesn't mean you're a bad player. Just about all players have made at least one of these mistakes in the past, learned from them, and improved their gameplay.
Before you start reading, think of these tips not as absolute rules, set in stone, but more as g…
Protected pages
Hello.
Considering that the wikia is growing popular with a lot pages (with a lot more to be created thanks to Hinterland's continued support to the game by providing new content, etc) as well as the staff team being small, I decided to lock certain highly popular AND comprehesive pages to limit the vandalism.
What pages am I talking about? Look for the Wolf page for example. Moose. Deer. They are already comprehesive and mostly complete, up to dated, etc therefore there is no reason for unregistered users to edit them anymore.
If you need to edit protected pages, feel free to register and/or login. :)
Have a good one. Stay safe out there in the cold.
A simple editing guide
Don't be afraid if you "break" anything. All edits to a page are stored in the page history, and if something does go wrong, you can simply revert to an older version. More importantly, any errors that do get made will simply be fixed by another contributor. Don't be discouraged if another contributor swoops in and makes adjustments to what you have just edited. It takes time to learn how to edit proficiently, so in the meantime, other contributors might help polish up your work.
FANDOM Wikia has many help pages, however I find them to be difficult to navigate, and they are often sorely lacking in detail. Therefore I've compiled this reference sheet which includes the basics of wiki editing, as well as direct links to the more advanced help…

First Post Ever! I Finally did it...
First off, what's up everyone thanks for all your content on the forums! Been reading them for years but never posted for some reason. BUT THAT SHALL CHANGE TODAY!
Anywho, so I finally did it in my survival game and I was proud so I gotta share! With three bullets I took town a bear (oneshot that foo) and moose ( twoshot the moose) and then was immediately attacked by 2 wolves which I got with my only two arrows, and while one was running it attacked a deer for some reason and killed it. then died... so I got all those skins and can now deck out my duderino.
that's it. the end. thanks for reading.
Bot Proposal
I am proposing the creation of a bot in order to facilitate monotonous edits. For example, at the moment almost every item page has a gap between the top of the page and the quote, which could easily be fixed by a bot. It would also be nice to have a bot should other needs arise. Do people support or oppose this?
The Long Dark wiki looking for active administrators
Hello fellow community members of this wikia.
I am happy to announce that I just adopted this wiki due to reasons from previous staff team being inactive and no longer visiting this wikia, leaving it vulnerable to vandalisers and any other issues unsolved. Thanks to Merrystar for giving me admin and bureaucrat rights.
My role in this wikia is to make sure everything are in check and any issues solved. Issues including, vandalisers, community members arguing each other, several pages need overhaul or subject for deletion and so on. And of course, improve the wikia by making it more cooler as possible.
As you know, I can not handle everything on my own. I am currently looking only one community member willing to become administrator of this wiki…

The Long Dark — December Update (v.298), “Timberwolf Mountain”
The following was retrieved from The Long Dark — December Update (v.298), “Timberwolf Mountain” on hinterlandgames.com
We’ve just updated The Long Dark’s Sandbox mode to v.298, which we’re calling “Timberwolf Mountain.” This is the last Sandbox update of 2015, and we’re thrilled to be able to share this with you.
TIMBERWOLF MOUNTAIN
We’ve added a whole new region to the game, called Timberwolf Mountain. It’s the purest wilderness environment in the game to date, a mountainous expanse with almost no “man-made” shelters present. It’s the perfect environment to test the new Rope Climbing gameplay.
ROPE CLIMBING
Timberwolf Mountain is full of steep cliffs and ravines, and the only routes to the summit require you climb ropes to get to the top. Balance…

The 20 Essential Steam Machine Games - IGN
IGN has included The Long Dark on its list of 20 Essential Steam Machine Games. We're thrilled to be in such great company!
"It's an uncommonly appealing sandbox survival game, and its thoughtful gameplay embraces nuances like spoiled food, hypothermia, and the need for potable water. The world isn't a nice place away from comfy civilization, and few other games drive this simple fact home so well. While, you know, still being fun."

Warning for Mac Players: "El Capitan" May Be Deleting Saves
Dear community,
We've heard from a handful of our Mac players that upgrading to OSX "El Capitan" may move or delete save files, rendering them unusable in the game.
We're currently investigating, and will post an update in the Technical Issues sub-forum when we know more.
Until then, please be aware that upgrading to El Capitan may affect your save file!
Thank you for your attention.
- The Hinterland Team
UPDATE 1:
We're continuing to investigate this issue. It doesn't seem to be affecting all Mac users who have upgraded to El Capitan. Our testing so far suggests that lost saves *might* be recoverable. We'll post more information soon.

The Long Dark -- Steam Halloween Sale!
Spooky times ahead! The Long Dark is part of Steam's Halloween sale, and will be 33% off until Nov 2nd.
UPDATE #2: Time-progressing bug fixed. All should be working as expected now! Apologies for breaking the game for a few hours.
UPDATE: Unfortunately, our clever attempt to update the game's Main Menu with a Halloween theme has backfired, and we introduced a bug where time doesn't advance (nor Survival Time). We're working on a fix and will publish it as soon as we can.
