A Note Left Behind is a set of 12 Collectibles found across several regions within Survival Mode. They were authored by several backers of The Long Dark.

Bread is about 2 parts flour to 1 part water. Add equal parts salt and rising agent, a small pile about the size of a quarter (Yeast if you're lucky, baking soda if you're not.) Raw dough should be tacky but not wet after kneading. Heat at 400F/200C for 30 minutes if the oven works. If you only have a fire, drop the dough in a heavy, preheated pan, and rotate every 10 minutes until evenly brown, and you hear a hollow sound when tapping the crust.

As a plant goes to seed in the fall, a period of hibernation sets in until spring. As the weather warms, plant seeds into loose soil with plenty of sun. Keep moist but not wet. If the final frost has not passed, keep seedlings indoors at night, as a single shock of cold can stun if not kill young plants outright. Spread plantings out over several months to keep producing into the fall. Green leafy vegetables will survive the following winter indoors.

Mystery Lake[]

Beentsy and I came up this way in the summers, when we were knock-kneed goofy kids. We fished and played with swords made out of sticks, wove leaky baskets from the reeds.

You could row across the lake. Those little cabins at the far end, where the tourists came and fished, hunted the deer and had their parties. We stood behind the counter and watched Dad welcome them, looked at the guest book and read the names.

When the summer was nearing its end, and the cattails turned to fluff, we blew our wishes to the sky. Always to come back. Always.

You won't remember me. The world doesn't stop when the lights fade. This is how it begins. Stay calm. Observe. Survive. Your father saw this day. Don't believe what you hear. What he did was for a far off dawn. Maybe you can recall the fire? Your father understood that we dance for our children's children's children. My dear, one day you will feel the voices rise in your heart. Enter a cave and stand until stars appear. Climb the highest peak. Sing when the brutality hits. I'm here with you. The winter winds can only get so cold.

There's nothing left. The matches got wet, and I'm down to a couple of tins of peaches and a can of pop. I don't know what to do. I want to go...but where do I go? Those wolves...those WOLVES. Everywhere, scratching at the door, pawing at the windows...waiting. Waiting.

A dull knife. A rock. A length of rope. It's like one of those jokes you hear about, when three guys walk into a bar, and the bartender says, 'hey, you can't bring rope in here.' Something about a frayed knot. Something like that.

Do you see the stars? Do you see that you are there? It's a fault of the mind to perceive separation. The same fault creates time. Look around, observe. Your father was trying to preserve what we have. The boxes hold the seeds of the universe. Breathe deep and persist. Fix that goal in your mind. Concentrate on a single flower. You'll feel that warmth on your cheeks again. This is just a signal from beyond. It's just a passing cloud from another world. The songs of birds will fill pink skies. Remember, the weakest light breaks the deepest darkness.

Coastal Highway[]

The most violent storm always begins and ends in a whisper. I've left this place now because the last summer is coming. If you want to find me, I'm padding across shattered ice, to the arctic sunset. These lights shouldn't be in the sky. It's a dance I don't know. Somehow we must progress from this. In a different age we walked out of the hot sands of the old continent. Now we're here again. The Long Dark is coming. All these tools will become useless. Take a step. Walk because it's your destiny to make it out of here.

Two more joined us today. Seems their horse couldn't go any further. One of them's called Sean. He's from Ireland. Not quite home, but close enough. Apparently he came here for an acting career. Best thing though, is that he's got a bag of Fruit Pastilles that he's going to share just with me!

Probably for the best since everyone's so paranoid. The other idiots would probably think he was trying to poison them. I thought it would be safer this far north, less people and all. Maybe I should leave?

Wes,

I'm going to try to make it to Mystery Lake. I'm running low on everything, but  we can find enough to get us through 'til spring, and then we can try to make it back to Calgary. Meet me there...we'll stay for a while. Follow the tracks in from the Carter...you'll see the lodge building, but we'll make for the cabins across the lake. Bring anybody you can find. Bring food. And a deck of cards.

See you soon,

Heather

We've lost a couple of people to the hypo (sic) hyperith (sic) cold last night. There's only five of us left, but fortunately Sean's one of them. He's keeping me going and he even gave me his last Fruit Pastille. It's a shame we didn't know each other before The Event. He would have made a nice B/F.

I hate this place so much. I should have listened to mama. Doing the exchange student program was the worst decision I've ever made.

I wonder if she's still alive?

Desolation Point[]

A flat sand or river stone, three inches in width, at least six inches long is ideal for sharpening your blade. Axe or knife, you will want to lubricate the surface with water to keep the filings in suspension, and your work will go faster. When no light is visible along the cutting edge, you've reached your mark. Strop along a piece of leather for final honing. The importance of a sharp tool cannot be overstated.

I keep hearing my mobile ring. Get excited every time. But it's just as dead as always when I check. I don't know why I still carry it around.

Sean's been my saviour, especially after Sue & Tori's suicide. He told me about how he always wanted to do Death of a Salesman. His American accent's pretty good too. We fell asleep in each other's arms last night.

Sean wouldn't wake up.
