Repairing / improving structures

Is the protection afforded by a structure related to the physical integrity of it (e.g. the hole in the roof of the cabin by Crystal Lake on Timberwolf Mountain is a negative trait) or is it more related to whether it's considered an "inside" area, in which case repairs to the Crystal Lake cabin wouldn't have any effect over that already provided against wind?

Well, you can stay warm in one of the icefishing shacks indefinitely with a sufficient source of fuel, so, sure?  Why not?  Besides, everyone knows that sleeping nekkid (with a constant fire, of course) is probably the best way to go.  Structural integrity doesn't degrade (not yet, anyway), so I think you're fine.

Repairs and self-built sturctures are currently not available.  Developers have also made comments suggesting they do not intend to include any such mechanics either.

The "safe" areas of the map have been refined in recent updates.  No longer are they completely protected or stable.  They now have ambient temperatures that fluctuate in kind with the conditions of the unprotected map areas.  But the difference between them and the rest of the map is assigned by the program and cannot be influenced by the player.
